Soiree Planned for the Fall The Non-Traditional Attorneys group is planning a soiree for the Fall. We'd like to invite local attorneys who are also gourmet chefs or have related interests (e.g., wine connoisseurs, bakers, etc.) to be our honored guests (and to display their talents for us). If you are interested, or know someone who fits the description, please let me know. We also need a location for the soiree. Please contact Laura Taylor (lauratayloresq@gmail.com) if you are interested in displaying your talents, or if you are able to host this event.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
WBASNY Formally Adopts Resolution WBASNY formally adopted a Resolution on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the WBASNY Convention in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This Resolution is important for many reasons to women in the legal profession, but is especially key as it sets forth targets for women and minorities in specific categories of legal employment in the United States. WBASNY will be issuing a press release on this Resolution in the near future.
Applications Being Accepted for Criminal Justice Act Panel The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is now accepting applications for the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Court. Lawyers from this Panel provide representation to defendants who, based on their financial need, qualify for appointed representation funded pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act. Applicants can also apply for membership on the panels that represent defendants in captial cases and that represent defendants in non-trial work, primarily habeas corpus proceedings. The deadline for receiving applications is June 30, 2009. Information Letter and Application
Applications Being Accepted for American Civil Liberties Union Volunteer Lititgation Fellowship The Racial Justice Program (RJP) of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is seeking applications from attorneys and law school graduates whose law firms will sponsor them to work with the ACLU, for a period of one year. Preferred Provider for Auto Insurance for WBASNY
New York Parent Education and Awareness Program (PEAP) Program The New York State Parent Education and Awareness Program (PEAP), an initiative of Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, wants to "get the word out" throughout the State about its certified programs. PEAP offers parent education by certified providers to help parents separating from their spouse or partner, or going through a divorce, to better understand the effects of their breakup on their children and to give them information and ideas about how to make the new family situation easier and more livable for themselves and their children. PEAP, chaired by GRAWA member, the Honorable Evelyn Frazee, has a presence in all 62 counties in NYS. In order to accept court-ordered or referred parents, parent education programs must be certified by the NYS Office of Court Administration through PEAP. Judges, in their discretion, may order or refer parents to these programs, agencies, and individuals may refer parents, and parents may self-refer. A recent newsletter article is linked below with more details about PEAP, or check out the website http://www.nycourts.gov/ip/parent-ed/ for a list of certified providers and for other information about the program.
Partnership for Equal Justice Campaign By now, you should have received a letter introducing the Partnership for Equal Justice Campaign and GRAWA's role in its successful conclusion. As you know, we have established a goal of $35,000 in new dollars to be raised from GRAWA members to create a space in the Telesca Center for Justice acknowledging GRAWA's prominent place in our legal community and to honor the contributions and commitments of GRAWA and its members. Please be a part of this historic campaign. Please make your pledge today.
Printer Cartridge Recycling Program The current recycling program GRAWA participates in was suspended due to vendor issues. We have enrolled in a new program and are currently waiting new supplies. If you have current recycling bags, please discard them. A notice will be sent when the new supplies are available. Thank you for your support of GRAWA through this program.
